With the 70th anniversary of Marvel is quickly approaching (August 11, 2009), the company is playing up on the celebration by releasing themed variant covers to many of its books.

Each of these unique variants is guaranteed to make you smile—where else are you gonna see War Machine grunging out on Fender Jaguar? Or Rogue vogue-ing it up? The 90s and 80s take center stage when the 70th Anniversary Decade Variants make their sensational debut!

All four of the books are being released June 17, 2009.

    Holy God, these are bad. Usually, when Marvel decides to do a company wide variant theme, they end up being fun and interesting. These are just horrible.

    And what’s going on with Rogue’s man hands? Bleh.

    Looks like war machine’s playing a custom strat, not the jaguar the quote indicates. The pickguard could be from a jaguar but the body and lack of pickup switches definitely indicates otherwise.

    I adore the Rogue cover (man hands? that’s low, Josh! though perhaps it’s actually a parody on The Crying Game ;) ). However War Machine a Nirvana fan? Nah, I’m not buying that – would have worked better with someone like Penance or Trauma (from the Initiative).
