So… uh… the kids over at the SciFi (SyFy) Wire have released a sneak peek at the costume design for the channel’s update to the classic comic strip character The Phantom.
The Phantom stars Ryan Carnes (Desperate Housewives, Doctor Who) as the title hero and as his alter ego, Chris Walker, in this re-imagined version of the classic comic strip, which has been updated to the present day.
Well there’s purple in the costume, but it reminds me a lot more of the costume design seen in Smallville than a classic hero from 1936.
OH GOD! KILL IT! KILL IT! SEND IT BACK TO HELL!

I didn’t know that the Phantom was in DUNE…The one without the hood looks okay, but that hood looks bad. I undertstand the need for the update though because of the fact that the spandex just wouldn’t look good on episodic television.
Eh, cut of his arms and legs and give him a cheesy mustache and that’s all I’ll need.
“Oh, sweet mercy! l’ve been rent asunder by your violence! Be merciful and finish me off…”
But, hey – at least he can join Carol Ferris & the recent Dark Billy Batson to form the Legion Of Crotch Logos…

Yeah, even the animated Phantom 2040 had a costume that was more in line with the classic Phantom costume.
Well… I guess at least they kept the guns… and the belt buckle… can’t tell from the sketch if they are going to be bringing the ring in… which would be sad if they didn’t.
Still, velcro Converse? A hoodie exco-suit? Whoever thought that combination was a good design, especially for the Phantom….
No that continuation is too rabid for such an early comment…
(The End?)
Wow, name typo. sad…
Anywho, thinking about it that design seems like a better fit for someone with an Assasin’s Creed fetish in Generic Future Setting 1 than the Phantom.
The hood looks pretty bad. Hopefully they’ll fine tune it. Otherwise, it looks pretty cool.
NEEDS MORE POUCHES!!!
a hood? are you kidding me?
These are the same people that think SyFy is a cool name.
I didn’t know the ghost-who-walks spent his spare time riding BMXs in the X-Games. I guess he washed his Vikings jersey with his extra Smallville Green Arrow outfit and out came Next Gen Phantom…striking fear of..of…well…nobody. And where are the rings? On the outside of the gloves?
You know there’s something about Classics that make them CLASSIC. SciFi needs to be careful how the handle these characters. Their updated Flash Gordon was something akin to what monkeys at the zoo toss around. I’ll watch the pilot of this show…but the first time he gets on his Phantom ski board…I’m OUT!!
My first thought was of the pilot episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation. Q holds a kangaroo court modelled after some post-nuclear era on Earth. The guards wore uniforms like that.
I don’t have a problem with the costume other than the fact it might not be a good fit for the Phantom. The big problem with the costume would be the hood, but that would cover up the soon-to-be teen heartthrob face. ;p
Then again, this is just a drawing. It might look better in the show. As for the Smallville comment, well what can I say? Wouldn’t *that* be the crowd they want? We are talking about TV execs, right?
Be hot wearing that in the jungle, wouldn’t it?
Hmmm…I don’t know, for a costume that can be worn in the jungle, it looks very stuffy. And they better keep the rings…they are an integral part of the character.
It reminds me of Dexter’s opinion on being a superhero in Miami. Too much leather.
Is he really going to be running around Africa in all that. More like Ghost who sweats buckets.
This is what you get when costumes have to be “functional.”
It’s pretty much totally lacking the single cool motif that they could’ve kept: the mask.
Frankly, it’s baffling.
