I’m sure by now everyone has read Robert Downey Jr.’s comments about the Dark Knight movie, and DC in general, but just in case, let’s shake that hornet’s nest again.
My whole thing is that that I saw ‘The Dark Knight’. I feel like I’m dumb because I feel like I don’t get how many things that are so smart. It’s like a Ferrari engine of storytelling and script writing and I’m like, ‘That’s not my idea of what I want to see in a movie.’ I loved ‘The Prestige’ but didn’t understand ‘The Dark Knight’. Didn’t get it, still can’t tell you what happened in the movie, what happened to the character and in the end they need him to be a bad guy. I’m like, ‘I get it. This is so high brow and so f—king smart, I clearly need a college education to understand this movie.’ You know what? Fuck DC comics. That’s all I have to say and that’s where I’m really coming from.
It’s a pretty sure bet, he won’t be in any DC related movies, hopefully his statement won’t affect his employ in any future Waner Bros. movies.

Bahhhahahahahahaa…whew. The gauntlet has been thrown down apparently. All the Marvel films against…uh…well, Batman and Superman I guess. He was a little harsh, but hey, it takes all kinds. Maybe he’s just trying to motivate them into MAKING MORE THAN JUST G**DAMN BATMAN AND SUPERMAN MOVIES OVER AND OVER.
Sounds like RDJ saw Dark Knight after it was hyped as the best thing since sliced bread and came away with “is that all?” Downey likely has specific expecations of a comic book movie, and “fun” is probably high on the list. One thing TDK was NOT was “fun.” But Batman’s one of only 3 or 4 main characters from Marvel or DC that can get away with that approach. (The top of my head list: Batman, Wolverine, Punisher, Daredevil.)
I can see where he’s coming from, the Dark Knight was long and complex, certainly no Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey.
Its really not that highbrow of a movie that it kills enjoyment in any way..Im sensing some sarcasm here.
If he is being serious, I blame the years — and years (… and years) — of substance abuse for killing his ability to understand the greatness that was The Dark Knight.
That’s right. I went there.
Let me take a moment to try to explain it in a non-‘high brow’ way that Mr. Downey, Jr. might be able to grasp without a college education, and despite the damage he’s inflicted on his own brain.
The whole movie was a coin flip. Now, follow along with me for a second …
Batman was ‘heads’, the incorruptable good. Joker was ‘tails’, the unredeemable evil. Order and chaos. Light and darkness. Two sides of the same coin.
The person representing the coin itself was Harvey, having shown himself to be supposedly ‘incorruptable,’ Gotham’s white knight, but willing to bend the rules to get the conviction when he threatened a witness …
Now, watch the flips …
Tails: Joker robs the mobs bank.
Heads: Batman busts the Scarecrow.
Tails: Joker threatens the mob and offers them a deal.
Heads: Batman ‘renditions’ the accountant.
Tails: Joker begins murdering people to get Batman to give himself up.
Heads: The Joker gets captured.
Tails: The Joker kills Rachel and burns Harvey.
Heads: The ferry boat passengers opt for hope, Joker is recaptured …
And, the end of the movie is the coin coming up scarred — just as Harvey himself had both physically and psychologically — with Harvey’s death and Batman being forced to become what the city needed him to be in order to preserve the hope that they’d been given.
The ‘flipping’ was the chaos that the Joker talked about introducing into the system. Each triumph met with greater tragedy until the coin itself ‘landed’, with Harvey having been corrupted and broken and, ultimately, killed.
Make sense … ?
Funny. I thought Harvey was alive at the end. Go figure.
i don’t see a problem
Marvel should have a talk with RDJ and tell him to speak civil of the competition. He just comes off as a poor sport. His movie did well and was good. Batman did better. So what.
Remind me not to challenge RDJ to any game.
My guess is that he’s taken the Stark persona to heart and is drunk 24/7…
“Marvel should have a talk with RDJ and tell him to speak civil of the competition.”
Yeah, he should totally take a hint from the employees at Marvel and DC comics. I mean, all they do is sing eachothers praises at conventions…right? Right?
lol, thats friggin awesome. and for the record IMO Downey could take out both Han Solo and Kirk. and Jacin B, i see what you were trying to do with the heads tails thing but the Joker planned on being caught. He pretty much had pretty much every thing down to plan except for Batman killing him. He just wanted to seriously f*** with Harveys head.
i’m with Mark I. on this one. RDJ obviously wants a fun movie, an action packed hollywood movie. iron Man was that, and it did it well.
batman was everything that Iron Man was not.
we’re not talking about box office here. if you go there, the thing that made batman so much money is the death of heath ledger. yup, i said it. of course it would’ve made money anyway, and tons of it, and probably more than Iron Man, but i don’t think it would’ve been that much. staying at the top of the box office for four weeks and counting.
hermit, it’s a combination of that, and everyone loving the Joker. Even little kids. And if your age 3-10 kid “loves” the Joker, please take that kid into therapy so I don’t have to deal with him in the real world in 15 years.
I think its funny that he thinks he needs a college education to get it. Spend some of your millions from Iron Man on few batman comics and the Long Halloween and then you’ll get it.
