According to Variety Michael Dougherty and Dan Harris have decided not to return to write the sequel to the Superman Returns movie. Opted not to return, or asked not to return? Considering the negative criticism the film received from movie goers, this sounds like a great PR stunt to let them bow out gracefully.
A potential writer’s strike is just days away, leaving the WB scrambling for new writers while at the same time trying to figure out who will play Superman in the Justice League movie.
Marvel Studios is adopting that let’s-try-again strategy with “The Hulk” at Universal, hoping a new pic, starring Edward Norton, will launch a franchise that Ang Lee’s 2003 actioner failed to do.
But WB denies such plans and said next pic would be a sequel with Brandon Routh likely to wear the “S” on his chest again. Legendary Pictures is co-developing and co-financing the project.

Who wants to be my agent?
I’m sure there’s at least 9 or 10 people who post regularly on this site who could out-do SR’s plot, even with the handcuffs of the last movie’s continuity firmly shackled.
First of all, we’ve got to get him into a black suit. Also, does he have to fly? Finally, he needs to fight a giant robot spider in the desert, maybe like that Transformers movie. Can he fight pirates too? How much would it cost to have a Spider-Man cameo? And how come Superman doesn’t dance? Spider-Man dances…
Apparently Mark Millar has said he’d write the sequel for free and is pretty serious about wanting to write it:

Make it so, then. If Mark I. will not write it, Mark M. is a solid second choice, heh.
I’d like it to be a sequel and not a reboot, just to see the creative way they axe SuperSon from the picture…and that needs to be done. Maybe not murder the kid, that’s brutal for a Superman movie. But there’s a few methods of getting the kid out da way.
I’ve always felt that super kid could just be ignored. Make his next adventure a real Superman story and just have him too busy to pop in on Lois and son. Or have a throw away scene “Like Lois I’m getting you and Jason to safety.” Leaves them at theFortress or something.
