Coming Soon.net’s database has been updated and states Will Eisner’s The Spirit movie is slated for release on January 16, 2009.
Well this film isn’t being released during the holiday season, and isn’t slated to kick off the summer block of films. Could this odd release date mean something?

I’m a little torn. I get the feeling that Miller’s going to heavily cribbing the art direction and cinematography of SIN CITY, which was original enough done once…done twice might be pushing it, even with superior source material. Also, I’d be a lot happier to see “Will Eisner’s Spirit” if the poster actually had a picture of Will Eisner’s Spirit on it. All I see is “Frank Miller’s Spirit” at the moment.
Still, I can’t argue with the source material, nor with Eva Mendes and Scarlet Johannsen femme-fatale-in’ it up…I mean, even if the film is an overall stinker, those two will at least provide a few bucks worth of eye candy.
The first two months of the year are the dumping grounds for movies that have horrible test screenings or that the studios have absolutely no confidence in.
The January date should indicate to you the level of confidence Frank Miller’s The Spirit has garnered from the studios and producers.
The poster certainly looks more like “Sin City: The Sequel” than Eisner’s Spirit.
The poster was more just something for Frank Miller to show along with his proposals for the film wasn’t it?
I have high hopes for this film. Roll on January 2009!
Elektra was January
Daredevil was freakin’ Valentine’s Day, and probably brought many relationships to an abrupt end.
Constantine was a February release
Ghost Rider was February
Er… heh. Brent must be right.
