Noted British television writer Si Spencer (Eastenders, Torchwood, Bad Girls) presents a sharp, unforgettable cadence in THE VINYL UNDERGROUND, a 21st century cross between THE INVISIBLES and CSI that brings rich social and political context to the dark, glittering cesspool that is London. Spencer is joined by indie creator/penciller Simon Gane (Paris, Punk Strips) and Eisner-nominated artist Cameron Stewart (the Other Side, SeaGuy) with bold, captivating covers by by Sean Phillips (The Invisibles, Criminal).

In this fast-paced, ultra-cool ongoing crime-noir series, an unlikely quartet of occult detectives secretly solve crimes — from DJ crack bars in Camden to the elegant, high-society ballrooms that make up modern London. The Vinyl Underground is led by Morrison Shepherd, a D-list celebrity darling, soul DJ, and son of an ex-footballer. Fresh out of prison and off a nasty coke habit, Morrison is joined by a fellow ex-con named Perv, whose seizures give him clues to crimes long before the cops, and Leah, a gorgeous morgue assistant who leads a double life online and represents the brawn of the team.

Morrison’s ex-flame Abi is reluctantly forced to join the team when her father is implicated for murder. A young boy’s head (with diamonds in the eye sockets) washes up on the edge of the Thames and seems to be connected to a series of ritual killings, a drug called Khat, and Muti magic. Can they get to the bottom of it?

  1. I agree. They want every last penny I have.

Is that Owlman on the cover of the Crime Syndicate one? Does that mean we get Owlman? Or do we get a “good” Joker?

I’m rather looking forward to this!

  2. Who is the Green Lantern on the cover of Crime Syndicate (and also, apparently on the Countdown cover)? Is it Kyle? I thought he was Parallax now, and that he’d stay that way up until some pivotal story point. Yes? No?

I like the Crime Syndicate, but am wondering what happened to the other “Earth-2” Syndicate from just before Infinite Crisis? I liked that Owlman’s costume more than the new one, I think.

If the Superman of Kingdom Come/Earth 28 is joining the Justice Society, at what point in the time line is he from? I have a hard time imagining that he would abandon his Earth and his expecting wife (or did Diana have the baby ala Kingdom Come?) to play hero on a world with at least one – and possibly two – Supermen (Supermans?). And why is he among the bad guys on the new villianous Countdown teaser poster?

Last point – is it just me, or are the “alternate” universe characters (I’m thinking the Batman/Wonder Woman/GL vs. Jason/Donna/Whoever cover) looking more and more heroic by comparison to the New Earth heroes all the time? Considering that DC has been steadily injecting more and more Silver Age material into the mainstream universe the past several years, the stories just seem to get darker, the body counts go higher, and I’m seeing a depressing return of black paramilitary outfits with buckles and straps as opposed to four-color spandex and capes.

  3. its good to see kyle doesnt stay infected for long… but to be a green lantern again is something i wanted since rebirth. team him up with guy after the search for ray palmer and give them their own series, put john in the justice league and i can die a happy man.

  4. Matthew Peterson on

Um… Didn’t they say that Kyle was meant to be one of the heroes of Earth-8? I wonder if that isn’t an alternate Kyle Rayner…

  5. Not sure if I’m just behind a step, but did anyone notice that the Bizarro version of Green Lantern on the cover of Action Comics is flying the Sinestro colors? This strikes me as new. Granted, it makes sense on a logical level but this was never the case before – the Bizarro-GL was always just a bizarro GL with a yellow ring instead. But now…. NOW… that’s a shift in thinking, at least to me.
