is18.jpgPeople Magazine has learned, and subsequently spilled the beans, that Canadian actress Laura Vandervoort has been cast as Supergirl for next season’s Smallville.

“She’s a combination of beauty, intelligence, a certain warmth, and great attitude,” Smallville co-creator Al Gough tells PEOPLE. “We’ve wanted a character to shake things up. She may be Clark Kent’s cousin, but that doesn’t mean she’s going to be the obedient one!”

And yes, Supergirl will be introduced as cousin Kara from Krypton, who will have all of Clark’s powers and can fly.

From the pictures, Vandervoort does look a lot like the Kara we’ve seen since her reintroduction in Superman/Batman, and according to her various fan sites, she can act well. Let’s just hope the writers give her some good lines and great action so she can spread her wings. I seriously doubt they’ll have her flying around in a blue miniskirt ala banning Tom Welling from donning the suit as well.  I also hope they don’t bring her in as the “total bitch Supergirl” we’ve had to put up with for the last couple of years.

Man she’s hot! But c’mon, Smallville’s really pushing it with seven seasons already.
