You… have… GOT… to be… kidding…
Yes, I’m thinking the exact same thing – but this is direct from the horses mouth… The only thing preventing me from calling bullshit on this story too is, 1) it is a press release directly from Marvel, 2) The Civil War trade paperback does actually ship this week, and 3) this is Marvel we are talking about.
Anyone who is collecting modern era comics have got to be kidding themselves. Between the over saturation of variants, second printings, and multiple trades …. there’s no reason (other than for personal reasons) to keep your books mint.
They’re killing me.
Feh. Comic books haven’t really been collectible for long term value in about 20 years. Too many people think that a dog-eared copy of “Amethyst: Princess of the Gemworld” is going to buy them a house some day.
That said, I question the wisdom of reprinting stories that appeared last year, in conjunction with a TPB collection. Quoth George Carlin, “How can anybody be nostalgic about a concept like ‘a little while ago?'”
Wait, wait…. I’m confused. Each issue of the series that happened last year are going to be reprinted in the order they should have been read in?
What in the wide wide world of sports is this?
Carla: nothing to be confused about 1) it’s Marvel and they’ll do whatever to make a buck, and 2) it’s Marvel and they’ll do whatever to make a buck.
What he said, only with bells on it.
If I were to try and figure out Marvel’s rationale for this, it’d probably be that they’ve sold thousands of copies, yet people still want the issues. Rather than let the secondary market money go exclusively to the retailers in the stores, they’re going to tap that secondary market and call it “servicing the customer.” They make the issues available, AND, since the books come two-to-a-reprint Chronicle, presumably they make MORE off the bottom line for the larger book. F’rinstance, if you want the hard-to-find Eggman #22 (featuring the tragic death of Spatula-Girl), you can pay the $19 bucks Wizard price (where no money goes to Marvel) or you can pay $4.99 and get that rare and valuable issue bound together with the Dr. Croissant #74, notable only for the point where the letterer misspells “Hoary Hosts of Hogjowls,” and MOST of the money goes to Marvel.
Of course, that means that the store that might have sold the $19 issue while people are still under the Wizard-inspired-delusion of it’s $19 value may be stuck with an unsalable product, which truly horks my cheese… but that’s an argument for another time.
Matt: It’s Marvel! The makers of Hulk and Spider-Man cologne! hehehe
Still, with the trade paperbacks out there, questions like Carla’s make perfect sense in the WTF are they thinking kind of way.
