Anthony Forgione had a great time at the Baltimore Convention, and was kind enough to let Major Spoilers post his report. He also has an Adam Hughes sketch for sale at his site. Take it away Anthony…
Hey All,
Just wanted to post an update after another wonderful Baltimore Comicon. For me the show started a bit rocky with Adam Hughes cancellation. Despite that news, there was a healthy line outside the convention center early Saturday morning. While waiting I had the pleasure of chatting with Baltimore stalwarts like Dave Bartee (Hi!), Dennis McGlynn, and Terry Peterson, and met new acquaintances like Esther Park and others. The most common discussion topic of course was “since Adam’s not here, who are you going for?”
My first choice was a fizzle. When doors opened I scurried off to Eric Powell’s table only to discover his list had just filled.
Next I joined the line for Tony Harris. I was 7th on his list, but unfortunately it didn’t pan out. Tony did not make it that far in his list. Strike two.
At this show, the third time’s the charm. I happened into Olivier Coipel’s line and ended up fairly high on his list. I had pretty much written him off, not expecting Olivier to complete 20+ pieces in a weekend. On Sunday I was delighted to find he had completed my piece and was well on his way to completing all his commissions.
I stopped by Mark Schultz booth to drool over his beautiful pencil and ink work. He is a very nice guy, so humble. I was fortunate to walk away with his Hannah Dundee T-shirt and a quickie Dino sketch. I also got to watch him work on a Hannah pencil sketch for a charity auction. It’s good to know that by the end of the show all his sketchbooks and T’s had sold out.
I was only able to attend one convention event, but it was a doozie. At 2:00 PM on Sunday, Maggie Thompson interviewed comic legend, Jerry Robinson. It was my first time seeing Jerry and I round his contributions to comics remarkable. After his talk, he had a signing for the final 2 hours of the show. I was extremely puzzled that so few people came by to meet him or get signatures and sketches. Fortunately, I didn’t walk away empty handed and received both a Batman and Joker sketch.
Saturday night I attended my first Foggercon, along with Terry Peterson and Dave Bartee. Mike, THANKS! to you and Heather for being such welcoming and generous hosts. “No! Not the bore worms!”
I hope everyone else who attended had as good a convention.
