Five days out of the gate, and it looks like Superman Returns has broken the $100,000,000 mark. According to The-Numbers.com, the five day gross for Superman Returns is right at $84,208,000 for domestic receipts (8,200 screens nation wide), and $19,800,000 for world wide returns, bringing the total gross to $104,008,000.
Even with the week long success, Superman Returns still has a long way to go before surpassing the cost of production (betwen $209M and $250M, depending on who is quoted). If we estimate a 20% drop in ticket sales per week for the next five weeks, Superman Returns looks like it will end up with approximately $280M.
Dan Gellman, Warner Bros.’ president of distribution, told Box Office Mojo on Sunday, “We’re looking at $110 million for the first seven days. If you can join that $100 million club in the first seven days, you have to be proud.”
